Nerd Rage: How Do You Cope With It?

Nerd Rage. What is it? Where did it come from?

If you’ve been playing games online, weather it’s Xbox live, Ps3 network, or an MMO, you have undoubtedly come across it.  Urban dictionary simple states it as:

Nerd Rage: When a nerd (as implied) video gamer gets extremely angry and starts yelling after losing or experiencing the tiniest disturbances.
Prominent in competitive online mmos, nerd raging was made famous in world of warcraft with “Serennia“, often considered the greatest nerd rager to date and “Mahiko” who is known to throw funny yet childish fits.

“Hey did u hear about that WoW kid’s nerd rage?” “Yeah he nearly killed the other kid when he pressed the wrong button”

Some of it can actually be really funny, just depending on the situation, mood of people currently around and other factors, but in general Nerd Rage is typically an unwelcome attitude in any community.

Why do people feel the need to explode in a full temper tantrum over some thing as trivial as a game? Well, that’s the interesting part of this analysis.

You see, in the English language we can express our emotions in a few ways; verbally, physically, and in written form. Now most obvious and easiest understood forms (in general) would be verbally and physically. The written word can be dramatically expressive if used properly, but given the time restraints and the recent boom of text and IM lingo our use of the English language has taken a downward spiral.
The blog that I read that sparked my opinion in Nerd Rage, is found at Wow Riot. I won’t go in detail about what was said or what happened as you can read for yourself.  I’m merely expressing my point of view here to say that while yes, nerd rage can be comical and down right hilarious to listen to, it’s not healthy behavior for gamers (or anyone for that matter) to Rage on about, especially in trivial things such as games.
I have a friend from World of Warcraft that is a Rage-a-holic. It doesn’t matter if its Counter strike, TF2, L4D, Wow, whatever.  If you fail too do A in X time; the rage meter goes off and its just not fun to listen too time after time. What really interests me is that it only takes a spark to set the forest on fire, so to speak. One case of nerd rage is like the Umbrella Corporation in Resident Evil, spreading its forever young cosmetic and knowingly (or unknowingly) gets contracted by the general audience and stems into something nasty.  Weather it’s tween gamers, old fart gamers, adult gamers, or just a  “nerd” that has raged at the most trivial things in life, we must all come face to face with this at one point or another in our gaming and personal lives.
How do you deal with friends or guild mates, or even random people you meet that have the Virus know as Nerd Rage? Dose it even bother you or have you just gotten so used to the YouTube and Ventrillo feeds of nerd rage that you have become immune to its effects?
